Tending to Our Hearts: A Radical Intimacy Workshop for BIPOC

Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without, but know we cannot live within.” – James Baldwin

HAI is committed to increasing our equity and inclusion across our organization and we offer partial scholarship opportunities to anyone who identifies as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+. Please complete this form to apply for a scholarship.

Do you often feel that you are a “doer”? Teaching, empathizing, holding space for and listening to others? Do you often feel drained, needing to maintain a certain appearance or way of being? In this one-day workshop you will have space to simply “be” with yourself and others, exactly as you are.

Tending to Our Hearts is a practice of letting go and allowing ourselves to be held by our community. “Doing” can often limit the time and energy we have to nurture and love ourselves. As “doers” we often find ourselves:

  • Holding the microaggressions or insults that come our way in daily life
  • Conforming or performing to maintain safety or to “get by”
  • Supporting others, educating, challenging others, empathizing with others
  • Believing in an impossible standard of perfection we feel we must maintain
  • Controlling and setting aside our feelings in an attempt to serve the greater good

We recognize that something valuable — even sacred — happens when BIPOC people are able to come together and share freely and unapologetically about our lives. Through experiential exercises and sharing, you will have the opportunity to look inwards, speak your truth, and experience the healing and transformation that comes from sharing your story.

You will have the opportunity to explore and perhaps even relax the armor you have built living as a BIPOC person in the United States. We will acknowledge the emotional walls that have kept us safe but have also limited us in our power and beauty.

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Have a sense of community with other people who share the desire to be more fully self-expressed and connected
  • Have an experience of respect and acceptance that can be deeply healing
  • Get in touch with your unique identity and explore the places you may be holding yourself “small”
  • Play with intimacy and your comfort with closeness to others
  • Explore what it would be like to “do” less to fit an ideal and to lean more fully on others for support
  • Have the opportunity to reflect upon and share with others your unique experience of belonging to the BIPOC community

HAI facilitators held the BIPOC retreat with deep love, expertise, and confidence – creating a uniquely brave space for healing and deep connection among our BIPOC family. I highly recommend the workshop to all BIPOC folks who may be seeking additional support during these challenging times.” –Renata Moreira, 43, Queer Latinx Mama

The most liberating workshop I have ever attended. My life is expanding at an amazing speed and I feel totally at choice and free. I actually feel more intimate with people on an everyday level.
