Becoming a HAI Team Member (Assistant) in the East Coast
Introduction
Many of us have marveled at how the HAI workshops follow so seamlessly. Often experiences during workshop exercises leave us feeling supported and held in love. Pillows are delivered, eyeglasses gently put elsewhere for safekeeping during an exercise, tissues appear out of nowhere, the workshop room is a tidy space, and a warm heart-to-heart is readily available. These things all help to make the HAI experience one to remember—and to come back to!
Behind the scenes, Interns and Assistants create “the safest room on the planet.” They are essential in creating the loving environment that you’ve experienced. All Team members are trained in active listening, leading small groups, clear communication, holding the room, social and dating agreements, and functioning as part of a team.
Why Become an Assistant?
- Assistants make a core contribution to HAI workshops. Assistants provide deep, loving support to participants. In turn, this program will support your own personal growth.
- Becoming an Assistant provides participants who cannot fulfill the financial or time commitments of Interning the opportunity to be of greater service to HAI, while deepening their own relationships with themselves and the community.
- Serving on Team provides Interns and Facilitators an invaluable way to get to know you as we see you working as part of our Team and interacting with participants.
- invite you to become an Intern, taking on more leadership and responsibility for the East Coast community.
Assistant Training Day (ATD)
You must complete at least Level 3 before attending the one-day training (and Level 4 before applying to become an Assistant).
This one-day Assistant training is offered only once each year. If you’re considering becoming an Assistant, prioritize attending. Due to space limitations, pre-registration is required. Register for the Assistant Training Day through the HeartBeat. The non-refundable training fee is paid when registering. It is the receipt of the confirmation that secures your place in this training.

After Acceptance
You must become–and stay–active within the HAI community. If your only contact with HAI is serving on Team, it is insufficient. Team members are the ambassadors of community for HAI and we expect you to “show up.”

- Take on a volunteer project
- Serve on a committee for a community event: Annual Ball, Pride march, Scholarship Auction, etc.
Leadership
Acceptance as an Assistant bestows recognition and responsibility within this community. As such, we are willing to invest our time and considerable effort to help you meet that higher level of service and leadership. This is not a commitment that we take lightly, and we ask the same of you.
